One of the main points of discussion in the United States is over abortion. Is is right or is it wrong? In the Christmas season I think of Mary, the mother of Jesus. She was ridiculed, mocked, and made fun of. What if she would have had an abortion because things were just too tough or she felt she couldn’t handle it? We wouldn’t have the Messiah who came to earth to save us from eternal condemnation.

The following is an article put together by a few of my friends at COG Virginia. Thank you guys!

Please comment and let me know what you think of their article that starts now….

A choice, or a child? That is the question that has haunted our nation for 36 years – and has left a crimson stain on the fabric of our society as our nation murders 1.3 million innocent children each year. Indeed, some 49,551,703 abortions have been performed in the United States since the conclusion of Roe v. Wade in 1973 according to the Guttmacher Institute. That is roughly 4,400 babies dying painful deaths each day by way of dismemberment,“too expensive” or simply a “burden.” Only 1% are performed as a result of rape or incest.

At the heart of this debate is the question of when life begins. Sadly, few politicians and medical professionals turn to the Creator of life for the answer. In God’s eyes, life begins even before conception. As He told Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you” (Jer. 3:15). Isaiah knew he was “called from the womb” (Isaiah 49:1). Similarly, in Job understood that he received his spirit while inside the womb (Job 10:18).

Even medical science offers no argument on this matter. On the contrary, doctors know the baby’s heart begins to beat just 18 days after conception. At six weeks, brain waves can be measured. At eight weeks the vital organs are functioning and fingerprints have formed. At nine weeks, the unborn baby is able to feel pain. Over 700,000 abortions each year are performed after this point in the pregnancy.

By the beginning of the second month, the unborn child, small as it is, has begun to look distinctly human, though  the mother may not even be aware that she is pregnant. By the time the baby is eleven weeks old, he or she breaths (fluid), swallows, digests, sleeps, dreams, wakes, tastes, hears, and feels pain. Babies born prematurely can survive outside the womb as young as 20-25 weeks old.

Still, abortion abounds – and more than 80 percent of the babies were normal, healthy children. According to Dr. C. Everett Koop, pediatrician and former Surgeon General, nearly all abortions are elective procedures. In fact, Koop was quoted as saying that in his more than 35 years of medical practice in obstetrics, “Never once did a case come across my practice where abortion was necessary to save a mother’s life.”

Abortion is not a victimless crime. According to a survey of 252 post- abortive women, more than half said they felt “forced” into the abortion by others. In another survey, 70 percent of women who had abortion said they believe abortion is immoral. So why would they violate their own consciences? Because of “pressure from people or circumstances.” In fact, more than 80 percent of women who report post-abortion problems say they would have carried their child to term if they had more support from friends or family.

It is worth noting that we have seen some progress in recent years in the fight to preserve life. The number of abortion clinics has decreased from 2,000 to 731 (there are 19 in Virginia). Most notably, there has been progress in the area of partial-birth abortions – a procedure many call four-fifths infanticide, one-fifth abortion because it takes place in the third trimester. The procedure begins similar to a breech delivery. The entire infant is delivered except the head. Scissors are  then jammed into the base of the baby’s skull. A tube is inserted and the brain is sucked out. The now-dead infant is then pulled out. President George W. Bush signed the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act into law on Nov. 5, 2003. It was hotly contested until its constitutionality was upheld in 2007 by the U.S. Supreme Court, in the case of Gonzales v. Carhart. In announcing this legislation, President Bush said “This right to life cannot be granted or denied by government, because it does not come from government, it comes from the Creator of life.”

But the battle rages – and the outlook is not good. The Supreme Court now stands in a loose 5-4 conservative majority. Only three justices are ineligible for Social Security: Justice Clarence Thomas (60), Justice Samuel Alito (58) and Chief Justice John Roberts (54). The remaining six justices range in age from 69 to 88. As such, many experts expect at least one, and perhaps as many as four appointments to the high court will be made by the current administration. This concerns many pro-life advocates as President Barack Obama has consistently supported the right to choose abortion, and even opposed the ban on partial birth abortion. Less than one week into his presidency, President Obama struck down a ban against taxpayer funded abortions abroad. In February, President Obama nominated David Ogden to become Deputy Attorney General. Ogden has argued against parents being notified that their 14-year old girl had an abortion, and has argued that women who have had abortions suffer no detrimental consequences and instead feel “relief and happiness” after aborting their children.

Indeed, countless more innocent children will be lost unless the church acts. It has been said that outside every abortion clinic should be a sign that reads “Open with permission of the church.” It’s time to tear down that sign.

What about a child with birth defects?
Shouldn’t that mother perform an abortion to prevent the child from enduring a lifetime of pain and problems?
Consider the following case: The father has syphilis. The mother has tuberculosis. They already have four children: One is blind, one was born dead, one is a deaf mute and one has tuberculosis. The mother becomes pregnant with her fifth child. Would you recommend abortion? If so, you would have just killed Ludwig Von Beethoven.

What I See in 2010

A growing church that is reaching the unchurched and developing fully devoted followers of Christ

The most quoted verse these days is not “For God so loved the world,” but “Judge not.” Unfortunately, we often fail to understand what this means. With the age of the P.C. (politically correct) police and social liberalism, we gotten far from what the Bible teaches on a lot of issues as to keep from offending people.

We all know that one of the ways we fail each other in the body of Christ is by our judgmental and self-righteous attitudes. What we don’t seem to realize is how often we fail each other by looking the other way and not going to each other to give warning and wisdom and edification. (For example, a pastor who ends up leaving his wife and kids for his secretary, and dozens of church people, including leaders, saying, “I knew they were involved, or headed that way; I could just see it.”) Well, it wasn’t grace and non-judgmentalism that kept them from speaking up—it was indifference or cowardice or the lie that we are not our brother’s keeper, that we don’t have a responsibility to each other and to God.

Sometimes we assume people know that they are wrong. We think we’re being nonjudgmental and gracious to them by not sitting down with them and kindly sharing what God says about sex, marriage, finances, lifestyle, etc… In fact, we are being neglectful or cowardly. We fall for the lie that sin can be in someone’s true best interests. It can’t be. It never is. Matthew 7 doesn’t tell us not to help remove the splinters from our brother’s eye. It tells us to remove the log from our own eye, so we can see more clearly to remove the splinter from our brother’s eye.

We owe it to each other to do what Scripture commands: “Speak the truth in love.” (Ephesians 4:15)

Here is a link to ABC’s Nightline program. This will give you an in depth look at the Church of Scientology, how it attracts superstars, and accusations against the church.

Here is the Tom Cruise Scientology Video (Scary stuff):

This week we continued with Part 2 of our series God on Film (Listen Here – Posted on Monday nights). We studied the Church of Scientology and it’s belief structures verses the Bible. Members of the Church of Scientology include: Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, John Travolta, Kirstie Alley, Greta Van Sustern, Lisa Marie Presley, and Nancy Cartwright (The voice of Bart Simpson).

The COS was founded by L.Ron Hubbard. He was an admitted adulterer, drug user, and believed he was a god himself. Hubbard was discharged from the Navy for various things. He also practiced witchcraft is in spare time. Below is a picture of Hubbard.

Lets now take a look at the major beliefs of Scientology and how it compares with the Bible.

4 MAJOR BELIEFS OF SCIENTOLOGY

1. There are multiple gods

The Church of Scientology believes in Thetans. Thetans are souls incarnate that live on other planets before coming to earth. Thetans are named after the Greek letter theta meaning “source of life”. The Thetans come to earth to inhabit us, and they become the true identity of a person – an intrinsically good, omniscient, non-material core capable of unlimited creativity. They have about the same capabilities as those who have been assigned by a supreme being (god like).

THE BIBLE
Romans 3: 29-30 – 29 After all, God is not the God of the Jews only, is he? Isn’t he also the God of the Gentiles? Of course he is. 30 There is only one God, and there is only one way of being accepted by him. He makes people right with himself only by faith, whether they are Jews of Gentiles.

2. Man is basically good

Scientologists believe man is born with inherent goodness and decency and we have personal force. They believe that absolute evil does not exist but all matter, space, and time in the universe is all good.

THE BIBLE
Romans 3: 10 – 12 - 10 As the Scriptures say, “No one is good—not even one. 11 No one has real understanding, no one is seeking God.12 All have turned away from God; all have gone wrong, No one does good, not even one.”

3. We are clean by human efforts

Scientologists believe we all have engrams which are mental recordings of all past negative experiences that lurk in our mind and need to be fixed. They are removed by using an e-meter (see image below).

THE BIBLE
Romans 3:27-28 – 27 Can we boast then that we have done anything to be accepted by God? No, because our acquittal is not based on good deeds. It is based on our faith. 28 So we are made right with God through faith

Romans 10:9 – That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

4. There is a cost to salvation

Scientologists believe that nobody but the individual could die for his own sins – to arrange things otherwise is to keep a man in chains. They also believe it is despicable and utterly beneath contempt to tell a man he must repent, that he is evil. It costs between $400,000 to $500,000 to join the Church of Scientology.

THE BIBLE
Romans 3: 21-26 – 21 but now God has shown us a different way of being right in his sight—not by obeying the law but by the way promised in the Scriptures long ago. 22 We are made right in God’s sight when we trust in Jesus Christ to take away our sins. And we all can be saved in this same way, no matter who we are or what we have done. 23 For all have sinned; all fall short of God’s glorious standard. 24 Yet now God in his gracious kindness declares us not guilty. 25 For God sent Jesus to take the punishment for our sins and to satisfy God’s anger against us. We are made right with God when we believe that Jesus shed his blood, sacrificing his life for us. God was being entirely fair and just when he did not punish those who sinned in former times.

These 4 comparisons are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the differences between the COS and the Bible. For more study on the COS click here…

Let me hear your thoughts.
