One of the main points of discussion in the United States is over abortion. Is is right or is it wrong? In the Christmas season I think of Mary, the mother of Jesus. She was ridiculed, mocked, and made fun of. What if she would have had an abortion because things were just too tough or she felt she couldn’t handle it? We wouldn’t have the Messiah who came to earth to save us from eternal condemnation.
The following is an article put together by a few of my friends at COG Virginia. Thank you guys!

A choice, or a child? That is the question that has haunted our nation for 36 years – and has left a crimson stain on the fabric of our society as our nation murders 1.3 million innocent children each year. Indeed, some 49,551,703 abortions have been performed in the United States since the conclusion of Roe v. Wade in 1973 according to the Guttmacher Institute. That is roughly 4,400 babies dying painful deaths each day by way of dismemberment,“too expensive” or simply a “burden.” Only 1% are performed as a result of rape or incest.
At the heart of this debate is the question of when life begins. Sadly, few politicians and medical professionals turn to the Creator of life for the answer. In God’s eyes, life begins even before conception. As He told Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you” (Jer. 3:15). Isaiah knew he was “called from the womb” (Isaiah 49:1). Similarly, in Job understood that he received his spirit while inside the womb (Job 10:18).
Even medical science offers no argument on this matter. On the contrary, doctors know the baby’s heart begins to beat just 18 days after conception. At six weeks, brain waves can be measured. At eight weeks the vital organs are functioning and fingerprints have formed. At nine weeks, the unborn baby is able to feel pain. Over 700,000 abortions each year are performed after this point in the pregnancy.
By the beginning of the second month, the unborn child, small as it is, has begun to look distinctly human, though the mother may not even be aware that she is pregnant. By the time the baby is eleven weeks old, he or she breaths (fluid), swallows, digests, sleeps, dreams, wakes, tastes, hears, and feels pain. Babies born prematurely can survive outside the womb as young as 20-25 weeks old.
Still, abortion abounds – and more than 80 percent of the babies were normal, healthy children. According to Dr. C. Everett Koop, pediatrician and former Surgeon General, nearly all abortions are elective procedures. In fact, Koop was quoted as saying that in his more than 35 years of medical practice in obstetrics, “Never once did a case come across my practice where abortion was necessary to save a mother’s life.”
Abortion is not a victimless crime. According to a survey of 252 post- abortive women, more than half said they felt “forced” into the abortion by others. In another survey, 70 percent of women who had abortion said they believe abortion is immoral. So why would they violate their own consciences? Because of “pressure from people or circumstances.” In fact, more than 80 percent of women who report post-abortion problems say they would have carried their child to term if they had more support from friends or family.
It is worth noting that we have seen some progress in recent years in the fight to preserve life. The number of abortion clinics has decreased from 2,000 to 731 (there are 19 in Virginia). Most notably, there has been progress in the area of partial-birth abortions – a procedure many call four-fifths infanticide, one-fifth abortion because it takes place in the third trimester. The procedure begins similar to a breech delivery. The entire infant is delivered except the head. Scissors are then jammed into the base of the baby’s skull. A tube is inserted and the brain is sucked out. The now-dead infant is then pulled out. President George W. Bush signed the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act into law on Nov. 5, 2003. It was hotly contested until its constitutionality was upheld in 2007 by the U.S. Supreme Court, in the case of Gonzales v. Carhart. In announcing this legislation, President Bush said “This right to life cannot be granted or denied by government, because it does not come from government, it comes from the Creator of life.”
But the battle rages – and the outlook is not good. The Supreme Court now stands in a loose 5-4 conservative majority. Only three justices are ineligible for Social Security: Justice Clarence Thomas (60), Justice Samuel Alito (58) and Chief Justice John Roberts (54). The remaining six justices range in age from 69 to 88. As such, many experts expect at least one, and perhaps as many as four appointments to the high court will be made by the current administration. This concerns many pro-life advocates as President Barack Obama has consistently supported the right to choose abortion, and even opposed the ban on partial birth abortion. Less than one week into his presidency, President Obama struck down a ban against taxpayer funded abortions abroad. In February, President Obama nominated David Ogden to become Deputy Attorney General. Ogden has argued against parents being notified that their 14-year old girl had an abortion, and has argued that women who have had abortions suffer no detrimental consequences and instead feel “relief and happiness” after aborting their children.
Indeed, countless more innocent children will be lost unless the church acts. It has been said that outside every abortion clinic should be a sign that reads “Open with permission of the church.” It’s time to tear down that sign.

What about a child with birth defects?
Shouldn’t that mother perform an abortion to prevent the child from enduring a lifetime of pain and problems?
Consider the following case: The father has syphilis. The mother has tuberculosis. They already have four children: One is blind, one was born dead, one is a deaf mute and one has tuberculosis. The mother becomes pregnant with her fifth child. Would you recommend abortion? If so, you would have just killed Ludwig Von Beethoven.
